World of sports

IN ENGLISH, THE BUSINESS WORLD DRAWS SIGNIFICANT INSPIRATION FROM THE WORLD OF SPORTS, WHICH IS REFLECTED IN MANY COMMONLY USED EXPRESSIONS. WE HAVE COMPILED A LIST OF OVER 130 SUCH EXPRESSIONS, COMPLETE WITH EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES.

HAIL MARY.
Quarterback throwing a 'Hail Mary', a last-ditch attempt to achieve a difficult goal.

This expression is used when an objective is very difficult to achieve, but a last-ditch, somewhat desperate attempt is made in the hope of success.

The term comes from sports, particularly American football, where a team that is behind near the end of the game tries a final long pass in the hope of scoring and winning the match.

Examples of use in a business context:

  • They had already received all the proposals they needed, but as a Hail Mary, we sent ours in anyway to see if we could be considered.

  • With just a few hours before the market closed, we didn't have enough investors, so as a Hail Mary, we started calling everyone from our presentation.

  • Because our company is smaller, landing this CEO was a real Hail Mary attempt.
