ON THE ROPES.
This expression is used when a person, a group, or a company is facing serious difficulties.
It comes from the world of sports-more specifically, boxing. When a fighter is 'on the ropes,' they are trapped against the ropes of the ring, with very few options left, and close to defeat.
Examples of use in a business context:
When the government didn't renew its funding, the start-up was on the ropes and faced an uphill battle to reach profitability.
I am on the ropes, if I don't find a job soon, all my savings will be gone.
