World of sports

IN ENGLISH, THE BUSINESS WORLD DRAWS SIGNIFICANT INSPIRATION FROM THE WORLD OF SPORTS, WHICH IS REFLECTED IN MANY COMMONLY USED EXPRESSIONS. WE HAVE COMPILED A LIST OF OVER 130 SUCH EXPRESSIONS, COMPLETE WITH EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES.

JUMP THE GUN.
Sprinters at the starting line of a 100-meter race, illustrating the idea of 'jump the gun'.

This expression is used when someone, a group, or an organization acts too early with a product, an initiative, or an activity.

It comes from the world of sports-more specifically, track and field and other racing events where a starting gun is used. If a runner begins before the gun goes off, they are said to have 'jumped the gun.' Most races allow one false start, but repeated infractions can lead to disqualification.

Examples of use in a business context:

  • You jumped the gun with your offer; now our competitors know what we are willing to pay.

  • You jumped the gun with your conclusion; the defense still had more evidence to submit.

  • If we jump the gun with this ad, we may run out of inventory.
