World of sports

IN ENGLISH, THE BUSINESS WORLD DRAWS SIGNIFICANT INSPIRATION FROM THE WORLD OF SPORTS, WHICH IS REFLECTED IN MANY COMMONLY USED EXPRESSIONS. WE HAVE COMPILED A LIST OF OVER 130 SUCH EXPRESSIONS, COMPLETE WITH EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES.

MAKE THE CUT.
Golfer making a shot in a tournament where only top players make the cut.

This expression is used when a person, group, or organization is selected after a difficult and competitive process.

The expression comes from the world of sports - more specifically golf - where, after the preliminary rounds, only players above a certain score advance to the championship rounds. It is also used in team sports during tryouts: if players 'make the cut', it means they have earned a spot on the team.

Examples of use in a business context:

  • After several rounds of proposals, we made the cut and became one of the selected suppliers for the project.

  • I'm happy to say I made the cut - I'm one of the final five candidates for the position.

  • Of all the locations evaluated, only three made the cut. The others did not meet one or more of our specifications.
